No they are not. To be flame retardant a curtain needs to be treated or made from flame retardant fibres. At Direct Fabrics all our curtain fabrics are flame retardant to British Standards and some to international standards

When choosing contract curtains clients always ask us what the difference with domestic curtains that they could purchase from the high street, i.e Argos, Dunelm, John Lewis and Ikea. These retailers offer low cost ready-made curtains that don't have the fibres treated to be fire retardant to BS5867. This means that they cannot be used in a commercial environment. Argos flame retardant curtains do not exist presently in their range dated 2019. So if you want to purchase from a retailer like Argos your curtains will not be fit for purpose for care homes or contract locations.
Ikea is a domestic retailer and is not geared towards producing BS5867 certified products. They have a super range of domestic curtain fabrics but they don't have certified products to bs5867 - this may have changed since writing this article. Please check with their help team. However, our general advice when trying to use domestic retailers is buying from a specialist that instead of supplying a ready-made flame retardant curtain will supply you with a made to measure custom curtains.

Contract curtains are required by law to be flame retardant, they must meet the BS5867 Part 2 Type B/C standards. We at Direct Fabrics offer a large range of fabrics that BSI have accredited with these standards.
