FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Voile fabric is a lightweight, sheer fabric that is made from cotton, silk, or synthetic fibers. It has a very open weave, which gives it a delicate appearance and a soft, flowing drape. Voile fabric is often used for curtains, draperies, and other window treatments, as well as for summer clothing and accessories. It allows light to pass through, while providing some privacy. Voile fabrics are available in a variety of colors and patterns, and are often machine washable.

Yes, voile fabrics can be used in commercial spaces. However, it is important to choose the right type of voile fabric for your needs. Direct Fabrics offers a wide range of voile fabrics, including flame-retardant and blackout options, which are suitable for use in hotels, offices, and other commercial spaces. It is important to check the relevant fire safety regulations for your country and industry, and to choose fabrics that meet these standards.

Voile fabrics are typically not recommended for outdoor use, as they are not as durable as other types of fabrics that are specifically designed for outdoor use. Direct Fabrics recommends using outdoor-specific fabrics for outdoor applications, such as awnings, umbrellas, and outdoor curtains. These fabrics are designed to withstand the elements, including rain, wind, and sun exposure, and are typically made from synthetic fibers that are resistant to water, mold, and mildew.

Our humble story started with Joe Simon commenced trading in 1947, his market stall was the place to buy velvet in the North East. The chances are that if you are from the North East, a member of family will remember the ‘curtain men’, Joe and son Martin, from the early days. Nowadays Direct Fabrics is a third-generation family business; for over 60 years we have expanded our business with loyal and dedicated staff.

ECS Enterprises Ltd’s trading entity, Direct Fabrics, still prides itself on the same ethics that Joe and Martin Simon stood by. We share our passion for textiles with all our clients to make your projects run smoothly and ensure the quality of soft furnishings you expect from a British manufacturer. We continue to provide you with a comprehensive range of quality fabrics including bedding, towels and restaurant linens, all at competitive prices. We’re preferred by some of the most prestigious hotels including the Marriot, Sheraton, Hilton and many more.

We look forward to doing business with you and we look forward to receiving any questions or comments you may have.

Voile and Sheer Fabrics

What are Voile and Sheer Fabrics

Voile and sheer fabrics are light fabrics that are slightly opaque, this means that they let some light through into the room. Usually enough to take the glare out of the sun.

They are used to provide a decent level of privacy in a room so that people outside cannot look into see what is in side without being close to a window. This means that voiles are ideally suited for hotel bedrooms or conference rooms

Sheer fabrics are very popular as a secondary drape inside a recess, you can choose to have a variety of curtain headings on them so they can be draped from a variety of option

Traditional heading like pencil pleat and pinch pleat are still incredibly popular but the 80mm wave heading and 60mm wave heading are becoming more popular. The modern hanging options are more contemporary and have a real flow to them unlike traditional pleated options

Coloured Voiles and Choices of Voile Fabrics

Coloured voiles are available in a large range of colours and textures, from a linen effect voile or basic standardised colours.

Direct Fabrics stocks over 50 different voile options and is constantly adding to its vast range.

Uses for Voile Fabrics

Voiles are soft light and bright fabrics that makes them perfect for events exhibitions and wedding venues. Using voile fabrics for wall and ceilings in marquees is very popular and also a very good low cost option for creating a modern finish to a boring event space.

Give your event a contemporary finish that welcoming and inviting for guest to enjoy. The softening of a space works perfect by draping voile over and under. Use coloured voiles to give even more texture.
